Every Trip Should End Safely

Target Zero is a statewide initiative of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to end serious injuries and deaths from transportation-related accidents. Achieving this goal requires a shared commitment to safety from everyone who plans, designs, builds, operates, and uses Florida’s roads, bridges, and rails.

The Role of Engineers

Engineering professionals play an important role in creating safer transportation systems — both personally and through the culture promoted by firms. Through planning, design, innovation, and the application of data and proven practices, engineers shape the transportation infrastructure Floridians use every day.

Personally, engineers can support the goals of Target Zero by:

  • Making safe and responsible choices when driving.
  • Avoiding distracted, impaired, and aggressive driving.
  • Following posted speed limits and traffic laws.

Professionally, engineers can support the goals of Target Zero by:

  • Considering safety throughout the planning and design process.
  • Using data and proven safety practices to identify and address transportation risks.
  • Promoting a culture of safety within their firms and professional communities.

A Regional Focus

While Target Zero is a statewide initiative, ACEC Florida Regions 3, 5, and 7 are piloting the pledge in FDOT District 4, which includes Broward, Indian River, Martin, Palm Beach,  and St. Lucie counties.
