Feb. 19-25 is Engineers Week

OKEECHOBEE -The Okeechobee County Board of Commissioners have proclaimed the week of Feb. 19-25 as Engineers Week.

Founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1951, Engineers Week is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers, the staff report explains.

Today, Engineers Week is a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education, and cultural societies, and more than 50 corporations and government agencies. Dedicated to raising public awareness of engineers’ positive contributions to quality of life, Engineers Week promotes recognition among parents, teachers, and students of the importance of a technical education and a high level of math, science, and technology literacy, and motivates youth, to pursue engineering careers in order to provide a diverse and vigorous engineering workforce.

“Engineers design, construct, and maintain the infrastructure and facilities that contribute to a high quality of life for all residents of the Okeechobee County,” the proclamation states.

“The Okeechobee County growth depends on engineers executing innovative, creative, and high-quality solutions to technical problems.

“The purpose of the Florida Engineering Society is to advance the public welfare, promote the professional, social and economic interests of the engineering professions, and stimulate and develop professional concepts amount all engineers through education an excellence in practice.

“Members of the Florida Engineering Society and the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers are making strides to interact with the engineering education sector to prepare future engineers to maintain our economic leadership and quality of life.”
